The Glory of Creation

“The glory of creation is in its infinite diversity.”

-Gene Roddenberry

Okay. Based on the following introduction, name this television show:

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before!

If you guessed Star Trek you would be correct. Now there is a method to my madness in quizzing you right off the bat for today’s entry. Gene Roddenberry was an American screenwriter, producer and creator of the original Star Trek series. Although he did not come up with Star Trek’s introduction used to begin each show, I find it fascinating how his quote that is being highlighted today has a similar connection and underlying tone to what the premise of the show Star Trek was all about.

His quote seems to celebrate the beauty of our lives due to the limitless diversity that is within the world around us. Much like how each episode of Star Trek had the crew of the Enterprise encounter new worlds and the inhabitants of those planets we have that same opportunity to meet and interact with new people from different cultures and races. We are able to learn and understand what makes them not only unique but special. There is beauty within each and every one of us if we take the time to truly get to know someone  and appreciate them for who they are.

This can all be possible if we are truly empathetic with one another. As President Barack Obama once said, “Learning to stand in somebody else’s shoes, to see through their eyes, that’s how peace begins. And it’s up to you to make that happen. Empathy is a quality of character that can change the world.” If we all truly dedicated ourselves to do this I know that Gene Roddenberry’s belief that the glory of creation is through its infinite diversity is not too far off of actually becoming a reality.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
