Your Focus Should Lie In What You Have, Not In What You Don’t

     One of Aesop’s famous fables was The Dog and the Shadow. The story is about a dog that is walking home with a piece of meat in his mouth. On his way home he crosses a river and looks into the water. He mistakes his own reflection for another dog and wants his meat also. But as he opens his mouth, the meat falls into the river and is never seen again. The moral of the story is to be happy with what we have. It is foolish to be greedy. Of course everyone wants more and we always strive to be better and have bigger things. But it’s important to reflect on the things we do have and not take them for granted. We don’t ever want to end up with nothing but regrets of things we could have done and didn’t. American talk show host and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey’s quote serves as a great reminder to the moral of The Dog and the Shadow.

Have you ever take a moment each day to recognize all the things that you have in your life? Great friendships, a loving family, a roof over your head or a job to just name a few. When you went through all of those blessings (as I like to refer to them) that you have I am sure you are grateful for everyone of them. You felt a sense of accomplishment and pride within yourself. An energy of positivity flew through you. Now have you ever thought of all the things you don’t have that you wish you did have? A new car, a bigger home, or a better job? I’m sure you have. I know I have. And what happens when and if you do acquire those things you are longing for? Do you take the time to celebrate that win or are you looking for the next best thing? Most likely you fall into a pattern of never having enough, never being enough. How does that make you feel? Does it make you sad, angry or depressed or jealous of others in all the things you continuously don’t have?  You probably have felt like you failed, while feeling shame or giving off to others a sort of “poor me persona.”

Bottom line is this: be grateful for all that life has given you and you will realize that this is where your true happiness lies. Quantity is not what is important, quality is. In doing so, the riches you acquire will not be of monetary value but rather value as it pertains to self worth and a better understanding of what you do have. You become more self aware of what is most important in life.
