Experiment Over Accomplishment

“I have always been more interested in experiment than in accomplishment.”

-Orson Welles

The biggest difference when it comes to an experiment and an accomplishment to me is that with an experiment you are still in the process of making some grand discovery or testing out a hypothesis. You are still in the thick of things and what you are going for has not come to a close yet. Now with an accomplishment it is that culminating event or the pinnacle of achieving something after enduring certain trials and tribulations. Actor and one of the greatest filmmakers of all time Orson Welles shares that he is interested more in experiment than in accomplishment or in other words enjoys the process rather than the product.

I also like to think that when we are in the midst of experimenting we allow ourselves to become more vulnerable in testing out what does and does not work. There is, in a sense the thrill of searching for the answers we have questions to and when we finally discover them it brings us joy and ultimately self satisfaction. Through it all accomplishment brings forth finality while experimenting allows us to explore more, within what we are trying to discover and what we may ultimately discover within ourselves as we regulate our emotions, thoughts and behaviors throughout. We motivate ourselves towards achieving both personal and academic goals which develops that high level of self control we all seek and desire.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards managing yourself better?
