Where Our Enthusiasm Should Live
“There is a certain enthusiasm in liberty that makes human nature rise above itself in acts of bravery and heroism.”
-Alexander Hamilton
Liberty. How often do we use this word any more? Most people associate this word with the Statue of Liberty in New York but does anyone anymore know what liberty actually means? For those that may not, liberty is the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by the powers that be on one’s way of life, behavior, or political views. It is in essence freedom.
When we become socially aware we embody this sense of liberty. It is what is supposed to define us as the United States of America: the land of the free and the home of the brave. It seems we need to find or rediscover that certain enthusiasm that American statesman and politician Alexander Hamilton said over 200 years ago liberty should have in order for human nature to rise above itself in acts of bravery and heroism.
The key ingredient for us to really bring forth that enthusiasm in liberty I believe is through social awareness. If we can understand we can best learn from the perspectives of others when we do so without judgment, appreciate one another’s differences both physically and socially while remembering to lead with an empathetic heart. In doing so I believe that this portrays the type of bravery and heroism we need today in order to rediscover that certain enthusiasm that is needed in liberty.
Liberty should not just be a word but rather be so much more than that and to me actions speak louder than words.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
