What Is A Team?
“A team is not a group of people who work together. A team is a group of people who trust each other.”
One of the most important attributes to attaining and sustaining relationships within a team is trust. Author and motivational speaker Simon Sinek says just because a group of people work together does not make them a team but that a team truly becomes one when they have trust in one another. It is one thing to be co-workers and it is completely another thing to be a team. So how do we move towards developing that solid team through trust?
Zoey Mackey wrote an article in 2018 for Berrett -Koehler Publishers highlighting some ways to best build trust within a team. Setting realistic goals is at the top of this list. We do not want to set ones that are too low for our team because if they feel that they are too low they may thinking that you don’t feel they have what it takes to get the job done and this will cause them to not put forth the effort you know they are capable of. You also don’t want them too high because then the team may feel overwhelmed and they may begin to question your own judgment. It is all a delicate balance and dance to get this right. When we intentionally create this balance between setting those realistic goals it fosters that trust that you have within the team and within themselves to make good decisions.
Accountability is another important factor in establishing trust and if we want to see this occur we as leaders have to walk the walk and not just talk the talk. We need to hold ourselves and the team to a high level of expectations and when things may not go as planned own up to it. In doing so the bonds of trust within the team will continue to grow.
Being direct, honest and consistent is also necessary in establishing and maintaining that trust within a team. Having clear communication is crucial to the success of a team. No one wants someone to talk in circles but rather get right to the point, be real with them and what is trying to be communicated. No sugar coating allowed. As the saying goes, “honesty is the best policy.” And to add to this, consistency as well is the also best policy. Nobody likes to be lied to or have someone constantly changing the course or direction of the team because this will leave people frustrated and very disengaged.
The two biggest factors that become the ultimate poison to trust is micromanaging a team and spreading gossip. If you or others are constantly breathing down one another’s neck to get things done, things will not go very well at all. You chose this team and to be a part of this team for a reason, so trust your instincts and trust the process and don’t become a puppeteer and try to control everyone-otherwise you will be by yourself before you know it. Gossip creates unnecessary drama within a team and can undo all the hard work you have done so don’t get involved in it and like I tell my students, “Stay in your lane.”
Let’s make the effort to implement those areas mentioned in today’s message in establishing and maintaining trust within our relationship with others while trying to avoid those trust pitfalls previously mentioned. It will only make your team a stronger one because of it.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your relationship skills?
