Actions Speak Louder Than Words
“We have too many high sounding words and too few actions that correspond with them.”
On October 16, 1774 Abigail Adams wrote a letter to her husband John Adams during their back and forth correspondence expressing how much she missed him while they were apart. There was one particular piece of the letter that stood out based on an observation she had about society and how they conducted themselves. Her quote serves as a reminder that we as a society often say many words, yet either do not know or understand the true meaning of them, causing us therefore to question how we can they live up to the words that we utter especially when we have no means of backing it up. If we are ever to truly embody what it means to be socially aware we must work together as one to do less talking and more action.
We as a society continue to battle through a pandemic, social injustice, job losses and our mental health hangs in the balance. We constantly hear on social media or through news programs how we as a nation are in dire straights, yet all of those who are supposed to lead us through these dark times are doing their own mudslinging instead of trying to bring a nation together. What began as empathy at the beginning of this pandemic as rapidly declined due to violence and hate. Everyone continuously talks a big game of what will or should be done but no one does anything (at least not yet) to ensure change will happen. Words become just words when there is not substance behind them. There is no plan of action to make things happen to enact a positive change. This can no longer happen. We have already said all that needs to be said on the matters at hand. It is up to us to be the change we wish to see in the world. We are the United States. United we stand, divided we fall.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
