Where Invention Is Created From
“Invention, it must be humbly admitted, does not consist in creating out of void, but out of chaos.”
-Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
English novelist Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley or know as just Mary Shelley to most people is known as being the author of the famous fictional story Frankenstein. Frankenstein tells the story of gifted scientist Victor Frankenstein who succeeds in giving life to a being of his own creation which ultimately leads to his downfall. Her quote refers to invention and that it does not necessarily happen due to something missing in our lives but when life is completely in disarray. I do however think invention and even reinvention as it relates to our own personal development can be from creating something that maybe missing in our lives that we feel we need to better ourselves or because of the need to make a change in our to as the saying goes “right the ship.”
Remember that inventions are made to solve a specific problem. Famous inventions have been but not limited to things like the telephone, the light bulb or the television. When it comes to inventing or reinventing ourselves we turn to things like books, seminars or trainings that focus on personal development. We are able to acquire knowledge about ways in which to better control our impulses, handle stress better, become more self disciplined or motivated as wells as learning how to set goals or organize ourselves better. We utilize what we learn and add it into our self management toolbox so that we are able to self regulate our emotions, thoughts and behaviors in different situations. Often times this focus on ourselves and our own development comes from self reflection. We realize something is missing in ourselves and work towards improving in something that we may be lacking in. This can also be pointed out by those we work with or from our own families as they are looking out for our best interest too. Even when we have fallen on hard times in our lives, this really sets up the opportunity for us to make things better by taking the time to reinvent ourselves. By reinventing ourselves we are able to hit the reset button on our lives and make strides to better certain aspects of our lives. This can provide a much needed jolt of energy and inspiration. The beauty behind inventing or reinventing ourselves is that we are in total control of making this happen and there are limitless opportunities for us to do so. So why not start today?
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards managing yourself better?
