Why We Must Keep Our Hearts Always Open

“If our hearts are closed, if our hearts are made of stone, the stones find their way into our hands, and we are ready to throw them.”

-Pope Francis

We are all different. Simple enough statement right? It is but it is not as simple as it should be to accept this fact for some people. Whether it is that we look different physically or even act differently, for some people if it is not in our own wheelhouse of what is considered normal or that it lives up to our standards then all of a sudden it is looked upon as being wrong. Why is that? Why are we so quick to judge? There have been studies done that by the age of two most children have already developed their own prejudices either due to what has been modeled for them or through their own experiences. That is quite scary when you think about it that you can already have judgements on certain people because of the color of their skin, gender or religious preference.

I believe the purpose of our lives is to knowingly and lovingly accept others for who they are. Have the chance to really get to know them, understand them and respect them. In today’s quote Pope Francis warns us that if our hearts are closed and made of stone they can become unsafe weapons that can only bring harm to others. I believe if our hearts are open it allows for love and kindness to flow in and out that reaches others. Instead of turning to stone and having the ability to hurt someone else or the ones we love it instead becomes a feeling of pure joy that encompasses one another’s soul. It brings forth a strong bond, a sense of connection between two or more individuals.

To me, it takes more effort to cast stones are someone else than it does to cast love and admiration for one another. Having an open heart leads to an open mind and one that can provide the necessary foundation for a better world. We hold the power to bring forth peace and harmony to one another if we really lead our lives with a sense of hopefulness and that when we learn to love and appreciate each other’s unique gifts and qualities. This isn’t a may do, it is a must do for the sake of our future and the future of our children.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
