How To Make Peace

“To make peace, one must be an uncompromising leader. To make peace, one must also embody compromise.”

-Benazir Bhutto

No matter what position you may have held or are currently holding, at one time or another you have been a leader of something. As a leader there has been or will be many decisions that need to be made that are easy while some are hard. One of the greatest challenges that a leader is faced with is making peace when conflict seems unavoidable. In today’s quote Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto felt that in order to make peace there are times when we will be uncompromising while there will be other times we must embrace compromise. The trick to it all is when to be compromising or uncompromising.

When we are uncompromising we show an unwillingness to make concessions to others, especially in changing one’s ways or opinions. This occurs when our own strong beliefs differ from someone else’s. There are things that we hold true that coincide with what we value. This could be but not limited to our political or religious beliefs for example. We are determined that no matter what, nothing will sway our decision making abilities if it violates what we truly believe in. However, sometimes in order to get what we want, coming to a compromise may be a necessary course of action. There are times we need to give a little to get a little. There has never been a compromise in our nation’s history where it was a one sided deal. The question that is usually answered to reach that compromise is this: what is either side willing to give up in order to get what they want? That in itself is a hard decision to make.

Either way we must realize that we are the ones who are in control of our decisions is us. In order to make the best decisions we need to look at what the potential outcomes our decisions may have in the long run. Often times we have the tendency to look at the short term gains when we need to look beyond those. We need to be critical consumers of any information that is presented before us to make the best decision possible. The key is making sure that the decision made results in a peaceful resolution for not only you but for others that are also involved.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your responsible decision making skills?
