“Each day remember your purpose. Remember your why. We don’t get burned out because of what we do. We get burned out because we forget why we do it.”
— Jon Gordon
Author and speaker Jon Gordon captures perfectly what I believe about purpose and passion. We don’t burn out simply because our work is hard—we burn out when we lose sight of why we chose it in the first place. I often refer to that “why” as our calling. Let me ask you an honest question: When was the last time you reminded yourself why you entered this profession? Was it today? Last week? Months ago? Years ago? If you can’t remember, it may be time to interrupt a cycle that quietly drains motivation and joy.
In 2024, one of my close friends passed away unexpectedly in his early forties. His loss changed the way I look at time, purpose, and presence. Since then, nearly every day I either say this phrase to myself or share it as a reminder for anyone who needs to see it:
Every moment matters. Make the most of your moments today.
Moments happen constantly. Some pass unnoticed, while others stay with us forever. As educators, we experience thousands of moments—many of them small, fleeting, and easy to dismiss. Yet those same moments often matter more than we realize. I truly hope that when you reflect on your journey, you’ve experienced more good moments than difficult ones.
There’s no denying it: this profession is hard. In fact, it has been one of the most challenging roles I’ve ever taken on. The emotional demands, the expectations, the long hours, and the weight of responsibility can feel overwhelming at times. And yet, paradoxically, it has also been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I think about the people I’ve met along the way. I think about the students whose lives I’ve been fortunate enough to impact, even in the smallest ways. Those moments—those connections—can never be taken from me. They are permanent reminders of why this work matters.
So take a moment and think back. Why did you choose this field?
Was it to inspire others?
To guide future leaders?
To break cycles, open doors, or be the adult you once needed?
If the answer isn’t immediately clear, that’s okay—but consider this your first homework assignment. Search deep within yourself. Reflect honestly on what originally drew you to this profession. Once you find it, write it down. Place it somewhere visible—your planner, your desk, your phone—anywhere it can serve as a daily reminder when the days feel heavy.
There will be hard days. Days when frustration sets in. Days when you question whether you can keep going. That’s normal. Allow yourself to feel those emotions. As the saying goes, “feel your feels.” But don’t let them linger and take control. Acknowledge them, learn from them, and then let them go.
Focus on what you can control—your mindset, your response, your effort. Press the reset button when you need to. You owe that to yourself.
Remember this: 180 days. 180 opportunities.
Each school year brings 180 chances to inspire, encourage, and change lives—including your own. Never forget your why, because when you remember your purpose, you renew your strength.
Every moment matters. Make them count.
