The Good Will Last In Our Future

“The true measure of all our actions is how long the good in them lasts…everything we do, we do for the young.”

-Queen Elizabeth II

So why is it that you do what you? Is it for your own personal gain or for the greater good? Queen Elizabeth II once said what is a true measure of our actions is how the good in those actions last. But the most important thing is we do it for the young which is of course our future. For me that is why I decided to be an educator. To help mold, guide and shape our future leaders of tomorrow. To steer those that are in of guidance towards the right path to be that difference in the world that I know they are meant to become. Every action I take I try to ensure that that good that Queen Elizabeth II mentions helps to make things last for that particular student. This could be a simple “Good Morning. I’m glad you are here.” Or it could be a smile along with other words of encouragement. Each of our students that come to our school each and every day I have the honor to work with. They each have a story. I can’t change what may have already been previously written but I try and take the opportunity to listen to many of their stories as I can because for many, they have gone without being heard by anyone: why they may be struggling in school or why they are successful for that matter. Who is their hero or do they even have someone to look up to? To rely on. Anyways you get the point. I look at my role as possibly being their beacon of hope. Being their own Jiminy Cricket-letting their conscious (me) be their guide.

In doing all of this I am able to be more socially aware I can look at things as I am taking the time to look at things through their eyes, empathize with them as to where they are in life and being able to appreciate and show them the respect they so rightfully deserve. You see, I believe we are not human beings but human doings. And all of our students have a lot of potential to do anything that they put their mind to. They are in essence a part of my moral compass in all that I try and do in this life.

I mentioned earlier how I try to understand their story and what they have written this far. What is even more exciting is how I can contribute to writing the next several chapters of their story and help show them the way towards making the world a better place and give them the confidence to reach for the stars. What better calling is there? Besides the reward is priceless.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
