What Can Make All The Difference
“One person can make a difference, and everyone should try.”
-John F. Kennedy
All it takes is one person. One person to tip the scales in our never ending fight to bring forth positive change, love and goodness into this world. As President John F. Kennedy says in today’s quote all it takes one person to make a difference and it is the last part of his statement where he encourages us all to try that separates the doers from non doers. If we do not even attempt to be that change and make a difference then this is where hopes and dreams go to to die. Often times we do not try because we are afraid. Afraid of failure. Afraid of letting others or ourself down. Afraid of the unknown. What bothers me with this notion of being afraid is that we have the tendency to look at the negative side of things instead of what might be a positive experience. We fall into the “what if” trap and this is a game I do not like to play because like a gambler who becomes addictive at the casinos you can become addicted to your own negative thoughts and emotions.
The frustrating part is you are already half way towards trying to be that difference because you are socially aware that something in the lives of others around you needs to be changed. You have already made it to the point of understanding their perspective and empathizing with them. In my opinion, when you are already at this point of recognizing this need you’ve already done the hard part. Now it is just pulling the decision making trigger of Social Emotional Learning and choosing to do something about it. Change has never occurred by living amongst the shadows as it is due to be right out there front and center for the world to see.
We all have that same opportunity. Sometimes multiple times throughout our lives in fact. Where that proverbial bell is ringing for us to step into that difference maker ring. It’s time we answer that bell and step up. Like President John F. Kennedy all we have to do is try and make that difference. If that imaginary door gets closed in our face there is another door we can open, a different pathway to choose. Failure will happen and we are also bound to get knocked down once and awhile. We just need to dust ourselves off and keep trying to be that change and make that difference. We only live once, so let’s make the most of our time here on this planet and bring forth social change for those who need our support the most.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
