The Power of Individuals

“Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play. Every individual makes a difference.”

-Jane Goodall

There are times in our lives when we may feel down and out and wonder if we matter. We also may wonder what our role in this life actually is and whether we can truly make a difference in this world. Today’s quote comes from English primatologist and anthropologist Jane Goodall and she believes we encompass all three of what I just mentioned. She is known for her revolutionary discoveries made through her field work with chimpanzees that suggested that many behaviors once thought to be exclusively human may have been inherited from common ancestors that we shared with chimpanzees millions of years ago. So let’s look at her quote more closely.

We all are here for a purpose. I truly believe this as it is a miracle that we are even alive knowing the odds are 400 trillion to 1. Knowing this alone makes me realize how special and precious being alive is. It is actually a true miracle. Remember we matter to our loved ones, our friends, those we work along with and for all those people we have yet to meet. Do not fall into a funk where we think we don’t matter because it is not true. Think of all those people I just mentioned whenever you are feeling down. Each of our roles may be different but it is our distinct role that has the ability to impact others. For me I’m an educator so I have had the pleasure to impact our future for almost 25 years and hope to do so for another 25 more. And a role is not limited to our jobs. It can be us being a husband, a wife, a brother, a sister. You get the point. We have many roles and each one impacts someone in some way. Through all of this we can make that difference in the lives of others. It all comes down to our belief in ourselves. The power of belief is limitless and so are you so please do not ever sell yourself short.

It is often said that the components of a moral compass are comprised of principles, values and beliefs, goals (including purpose and wants) and behavior (through thoughts, emotions and actions). These all interact together and make us into who we are. So let’s honor those amazing odds of us actually being alive and do something with them. Let us use our special gifts to be that difference in the lives of others. Don’t waste it and let our moral compasses show us the way.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
