Be True to Yourself
“I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false and incur my own abhorrence.”
-Frederick Douglas
One of the most difficult things to be is to be true to ourselves especially when we may face unwanted teasing or harassment from others. In today’s quote American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman Frederick Douglas reminds us that when it all comes down to it, we are the ones that will have to live with the decisions we make especially when they go against what we truly value and believe in. Our moral compass is built upon knowing what is right and wrong and how we should behave at all times. We should not give into peer pressure or try and keep up with the Joneses if it goes against what we morally and ethically stand for. The worst thing we can be is fake and live a untruthful life. When we start lying to ourselves, we are lying to others in turn, and begin heading down a path towards uncertain consequences.
When you look in the mirror who is it that you want to see? Someone who despite everything remains true to yourself and what you value? Or someone who lives a facade where you live a lie and truly don’t know who you are and what you hope to be? The choice is ultimately yours and for your sake I hope you make the right choice.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
