Let Someone Know That You Care

“The most important thing that every child needs to know, is that somebody cares about them.”

-Dr. Michele Borba

Children are our most valuable asset and the relationship we have with them is just as important. For many, there are circumstances and experiences that they have gone through within in their short life that we can’t even possibly imagine. Being an educator I see this unfortunately all too often it seems. Situations like their family is living at a hotel because they couldn’t pay their rent, their parents are going through a divorce or they have experienced some sort of other trauma. Over the years, I have come to learn how much of a privileged life I had lived growing up and also how blessed I’ve been. Now not all students have had these unfortunate experiences I mentioned earlier as some have had a similar upbringing thus far. Whether a child has or has not experienced some sort of trauma Educational psychologist Dr. Michele Borba reminds us in today’s quote that the most important thing that every child needs to know is that somebody cares about them.

In 2018 Joe Pizzuto-Pomaco wrote a blog where he highlighted 25 ways that we can show kids that we care about them:

1. Keep Your Word

2. Be Honest

3. Encourage Their Dreams

4. Write Them Notes of Encouragement

5. Compliment Them

6. Tell Them You’re Proud of Them

7. Catch Them Doing Something Good

8. Don’t Point Out Every Mistake

9. Say Yes Frequently

10. Give Them a Hug

11. Cheer Them Up When They’re Having a Bad Day

12. Be Silly with Them

13. Smile at Them

14. Be Approachable

15. Talk to Them

16. Play with Them

17. Take an Interest in Their Interests

18. Ask for Their Input

19. Let Them Help You

20. Be Patient

21. Make Them Feel Safe

22. Stand Up for Them

23. Show Up to Their Events

24. Display Their Work

25. Remember Their Birthdays

Just by applying any of these can make a world of difference in the life of a child or for any adult relationships for that matter. As Dr. John Trainer once said, “Children are not a distraction from more important work. They are the most important work.”

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your relationship skills?
