Our Moral Compass: When To Let Go Of A Dream

“Sometimes knowing when to let go of a dream is as important as knowing when to go after one.”

-Jamie Kern Lima

We’ve all had a dream or dreams. Or at least I hope you have. Have they all come true? More than likely some have and some have not. For me some of my dreams consisted of having a wife, being a father, owning a home and have a career that impacted the lives of others. So far those particular dreams have come true. Now my childhood dream of becoming a professional baseball player? Never even became an option-stopped playing it competitively before high school. I came to realize that I just did not have that certain skillset nor desire to try and make it. But like in today’s quote by author and speaker Jamie Kern Lima sometimes knowing when to let go of a dream is as important as knowing when to go after one.

Knowing when to let go of something will be different for everyone. Every one’s timetable is different as well as the level of their patience. For example I still have aspirations to be a published author and although my first book has not had an takers yet I believe timing is everything and so in the meantime I will continue to refine what I have written and expand on some sections if need be. I’ve continued to write this blog and produce a podcast based on these writings because I love doing it. I don’t have many followers and that was never my true intention. It was and continues to be impacting anyone who this may happen to reach via social media or within their email box. Just touching one life to me feels like I’m touching millions. So to me my dream has already happened here as well.

All of these dreams for me have occurred because I have stayed true to the morals and values of my own moral compass. I recognize who I am and what my strengths are as well as my challenges. I adapt while trying to acquire new skills that will further enhance ones I already possess. I realize there will be some dreams that have now and that I will have in the future where I will need to let go of them but it will be on my watch and not someone else’s. Remember this for when you are deciding when it or is not important to pursue a dream of yours. You and your decision alone keeps the dream alive. Don’t ever forget that.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self awareness?
