Do The Right Thing
“It takes no compromise to give people their rights…it takes no money to respect the individual. It takes no political deal to give people freedom. It takes no survey to remove repression.”
When it is all said it done it should be our moral responsibility to always try and do the right thing in every situation. American politician and Gay Rights advocate Harvey Milk reminds of this socially aware task at hand. He gives specific examples as to how things can and should be so effortless on our part when we really think about it.
To give someone their rights should be done without even a spoken word because no one race, gender or creed is greater than another. We are all equal and should forever be treated as such. Respect should not come at any monetarial price because respect is earned as it is built upon trustworthiness and other high ethical qualities. In my opinion if you cannot respect others you more than likely have a hard time respecting yourself. The only cost that it takes to give someone respect is your time. Our time is really priceless and we should live with an open mind and hear at all times as we would want others to do the same.
There should not even be a question as to everyone should have freedom in this world. I don’t believe there is any sort of deal that somehow gives others freedom. Who are we to hold such power and withhold this from someone else unless they had truly broken the law and committed a crime. Repression is something that socially is unacceptable and does not need to be looked at as some sort of poll to be taken to see if it needs to be in our lives because it doesn’t. It may push negative things out of our conscious for a short time but it will never fully go away and will resurface becoming more painful in the long run. We need to take the time to rectify this and address the pain head on.
It is time we begin the healing process for all members of society. It is been too long with regards to the suffering that has been endured over time and like Spike Lee’s movie said we must “Do The Right Thing.”
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your responsible decision making skills?
