Don’t Be So Self Absorbed
“Cautious, careful people, always casting about to preserve their reputation and social standing, never can bring about a reform.”
-Susan B. Anthony
We all have certain beliefs of what needs to be changed in the world. Some people are more outspoken while others are more reserved and look for times or opportunities to say or do something while there are others that stay silent because they worry about what may happen to their reputation if they were to speak out. American women’s activist Susan B. Anthony’s message for today is to encourage those of the latter that they will never bring forth reform if they are all worried about themselves and their own social status.
Enacting change can’t happen just sitting on the sideline in the game of life. You have the power within yourself to bring forth that change and call to action for reform in whatever areas you feel need that change. I think as long as we approach things and present ourselves in a respectful manner by not degrading anything or anyone and come with solutions to the problems we see are prevalent then our reputation will remain intact. Reputations are built upon other people’s opinions and perspectives. This includes our own as well. It is the people, that in the words of Clark Gable in the movie Gone With The Wind about not giving a damn that are able to bring about reform.
So do not worry about what other people may think of you because the main thing is what you think of yourself. If you believe in something strong enough and want to leave this world having impact on something that you want changing for the better, you need to put aside your fears and focus on making that difference and speaking on what matters to you. That alone is what is most important towards making that change.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards managing yourself better?
