Welcome to the Our Moral Compass Podcast. Thank you for listening and we hope you consider subscribing to the podcast for future episodes.

“Science progresses best when observations force us to alter our preconceptions.”

-Vera Rubin

American astronomer Vera Rubin’s quote refers to the progression of Science but I think when she said this she was also referring to life and how it progresses when our observations force us to alter our preconceptions as well. Whether we’d like to admit it or not we are all born with our own preconceptions. But it is through our efforts in becoming more socially aware that we put up a never ending fight to extinguish these preconceptions.

When we learn to take the perspectives of and empathize with others, especially when they are from diverse backgrounds and cultures it is where we lead our lives with an open heart which in turns leads to us living it with an open mind. We develop the ability to understand and accept how social and ethical norms are different from ours and ways in which we can best support others.

Diversity is only appreciated when we respect one another for our differences. When we do this we avoid trying to control others and how they feel. We allow others to be different and celebrate those differences. We are less likely to judge or compare us to one another and therefore can put forth thoughtful advice and insight for the betterment of us all.

When we remove our own biases and look at things through the lens of others and their perspective, the doorway towards true peace and harmony is within reach. Our relationships with others can only strengthen over time and social awareness becomes a tool than is an asset in your arsenal towards becoming your best self and your efforts to making this world a better place. It is the sort of light that leads the way towards a better tomorrow of all human kind.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
