“No matter how hard things get, or how hopeless things look, don’t give up. Realize that we don’t create our world from the outside in. We create and transform it from the inside out. Be the Coffee Bean.”
-Damon West
Life is not easy and at times when all hope is lost speaker and author of the book The Coffee Bean Damon West encourages us in today’s quote not to throw in the towel and give up. But it is the next part of his quote that resonates with me most. We don’t create the world from the outside in but from the inside out. The word he uses is transform and then relates it to his coffee bean analogy where he compares an egg, a carrot and a coffee bean in his book and what happens to each of them when they go into a boiling pot of water.
The egg becomes hardened while the carrot becomes soft. Both of these examples started out being the opposite of what they eventually turned out to be. Neither one adapted to their environment and in a sense conformed to its surroundings. Now for the coffee bean, it transformed into coffee. It adapted to its surroundings and took what it had on the inside, those coffee bean juices and transformed itself into coffee.
The purpose of this analogy is that we in fact control ourselves and what we are willing to conform to. So let us be the coffee bean and thrive in this beautiful thing that we call life. Let us transform the world around us in the process for a better tomorrow.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards managing yourself better?
