“The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it….Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.”
-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
We all recognize we have certain weaknesses. Some may be different from person to person. However as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr points out in today’s quote our ultimate weaknesses as a society is violence. There is no getting around it. Violence breeds violence. Unrest. Anxiety. Any way you look at it, it brings forth nothing but despair and sadness. There is no benefit and everyone involved gets hurt either physically, emotionally or both. No one truly wins and everyone loses because we’ve given into hate and that hate leads to eternal darkness. It becomes a negative domino effect that can spin a society and the people who live within it out of control. As Dr. King says “darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can.do that.” And this is true now as it was back then and it will be in the future. The choices we make right here, right now can be that light to drive out the darkness. It is within our control if we allow it to be. Be that light and let’s stamp out this darkness once and for all. Let’s put an end to violence because it is all unnecessary.
