Becoming The Change Podcast (Episode 485): Acceptance

Welcome to the Becoming The Change Podcast. Each daily reading focuses on a different quote on how we can best apply it to our own moral compass and one of the five areas in Social Emotional Learning: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision Making. Thank you for listening and we hope you consider subscribing to the podcast for future episodes.

Acceptance

“We cannot change anything until we accept it. Condemnation does not liberate, it oppresses.”

-Carl Jung

Acceptance. Acceptance is the action of consenting to receive or undertake something offered. In today’s quote Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung promotes the thinking that change cannot occur until we accept it. Denying or disapproving it does not free us from the change either but rather continues to restrict us from growing as an individual. Now the trick is how do we learn to accept change intellectually and then take action towards doing so. In January 2020 Trudi Griffin wrote on WikiHow ways in which we do just that:

Dealing with Change Intellectually

Embrace your feelings about change. Work through things in order to improve things.

Understand that change is an inevitable part of life. Change is necessary for old things to go and nw things to come.

Try to put change in perspective. Reframe the situation or make a list of the things you are grateful for.

Look at the bright side. Often times more good than bad comes from change.

Try to understand why the change unsettles you so much.

Embrace your dynamic nature and ability to adapt.
Looks at things as an opportunity for you to grow.

Taking Action

Manage your stress or uneasiness with change by engaging in stress-reducing activities. Examples of this are exercise and meditation.

Stay busy. Be productive and stay focused.

Talk it out. Lean on your friends and loved ones about the change.

Create a list of life goals for yourself. Find a way to move on and think about your future.

Try to build a better world. Use change to fuel your life.
