Deciding To Take That First Step

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”

-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

You got to have faith. That is what George Michael sang in his debut solo album Faith. When we have faith in something we have complete trust or confidence in someone or something. If you ever saw the movie Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade Harrision Ford’s Indiana Jones had to have faith in stepping onto what seemed to be nothing in order to reach of the other side of a pit. As it turned out his faith in believing that something was there was in fact true as a bridge appeared before his eyes to help him cross in order to get to the Holy Grail and save his father. The 1980 USA hockey team had to have faith in their own ability in order to upset the heavily favored Russians in the Olympics. There are many other examples in sports and in life where faith in overcoming what may seem like the impossible is in fact possible and achievable for that matter.

In today’s quote Dr. King reminds us that instead of always looking towards the future or seeing the big picture, sometimes we just need to take that first step in moving forward in the right direction to get to where we are going. And its ok if we are unsure as to what that actually is but if we have faith that we will eventually get there, then that is all that is really needed. It’s like what Peter Pan said to Wendy and the boys in the story Peter Pan that in order for them to actually fly is to “all you need is faith, trust and a little pixie dust.” Now unfortunately we don’t have a Tinker Bell but we do have faith and trust to rely on and like a famous country song says “two out of three ain’t bad.” So take that leap of faith and take that first step.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your responsible decision making skills?
