A Great Team vs. A Team of Greats

“It’s better to have a great team than a team of greats.”

-Simon Sinek

When you look at strong teams, businesses or schools what makes them strong? Or great for that matter? It is because they compliment one another. Each person within that team has a certain skill set that compliments one another within that team. These strengths only make the team stronger. They have an unbreakable bond and they look out for one another and put the needs of the team before their own.

But what if there is a team of greats? A team where each member is at the top of their game or class. The best of the best. The issue with this is that they are not only a team of greats but a team that isn’t really a team but a group of individuals. Individuals who have have their own individual agenda, who look out for number one: themselves. This team can only keep it together for so long before their own egos get the best of them.

Author and speaker Simon Sinek reminds us that it’s better to have a great team than a team of greats. Lets compare two trains going towards the same destination: one is in it for the long haul and keeping each cart together, while the other is setting themselves up for a potential “off the tracks” type of ride which is no good for anyone. Which train would you rather ride?

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your relationship skills?
