What Problems Truly Are

“Problems are not stop signs; they are guidelines.”

-Robert Schuller

When we hear the word problems it has a rather negative connotation doesn’t it? At least that has been how its been portrayed for as long as I can remember. That is until American author Robert Schuller’s perspective on what problems truly are. He once said they are not stop signs but rather guidelines.

When I first read this a light bulb went off in my head and I realized that I had looked at problems all wrong. They only stop us in our tracks if we let them. We need to realize that if there is a wall in front of us, we should look for a way around. For every problem there is a solution. I now think problems allow us the time necessary to reflect on the current situation at hand and ways in which we can flip the script and use what we have learned from them to help get closer to finding a solution.

When he mentioned that problems are more like guidelines, I feel that something similar to guidelines are the principles and/or moral values of our own moral compass. Our moral compass can serve as that guide that we all need to rely on in our time of need in helping us decide what our next course of action would be. Problems are only negative when we label them as such. When we change our perspective, we can change our outcome for the better.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
