“So many times we know what we intended to do, but our behaviors don’t always match. We need grace and empathy in the moments our actions don’t match our intentions. Our students need this too.”
-Dr. Naomi Brahim, MTSS Manager
In life we all have the best of intentions to do and say what is right, for others and for ourselves. But as we all know this does not always happen. Although we know what to do and how to act, for whatever reason our emotions at times get the best of us. This is why self management is so crucial in mastering. Dr. Naomi Brahim, an MTSS Manager mentions in today’s quote that when things don’t necessarily align between our intentions and actions, this is when we must rely on grace and empathy towards ourselves and others to achieve a sense of balance.
Grace is when we act pleasant, are in control and display what are deemed as being polite behaviors. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. It is in essence looking at things through someone else’s eyes, through their perspective. In fact these two emotions are in my opinion a package deal as it is hard to have one without the other. It is important when exhibiting grace to have compassion for someone else, to never try and compare. We must give of ourselves without any expectation of someone doing the same for us in return. Within that we must extend to others the benefit of the doubt. In displaying empathy we must first and foremost listen to what they are actually saying to us. This will result in trust being built. It is also important to acknowledge and connect with others and their feelings because everyone’s feelings are genuine. What most are looking for is that empathetic person who is just trying to support them the best that they can. To be one who is there for them in good and bad times.
When we lead with grace and empathy our true intentions will come out to other leading towards a better relationships with ourselves and others.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards managing yourself better?
