Life’s Greatest Gift

“I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve.”

-Albert Schweitzer

One of the cornerstones of self awareness is the perception of oneself. To accurately develop your self perception is to really know who you are and what you have to offer others. Notice how I said what you offer others and not just yourself. Yes it is important to take care of yourself first but the reasoning behind this is just like the airplane example we have discussed before: that we need to put on our oxygen mask first before we can help others. In today’s focus its important that we move from the self and realize that our true intent is to serve others. This is the at the heart of servant leadership.

As Albert Schweitzer states we don’t know what our destiny will be, we do have control over what we can become through our conscious decision making. True happiness will not be found in having a bigger house, a fancier car or making more money. This type of happiness is short lived.

Happiness is really found and maintained through serving others. Have you ever helped a neighbor cut their lawn, gone grocery shopping for them or helped them in their time a need? I’m sure we all have. It is my hope that this was done out of purely wanting to help them with no intent of having them pay you back in some way but you just did it because you knew it was the right thing to do. That is what servant leadership is all about.

It is bottom up approach that its reward is internal and one that I believe is the greatest one you can receive. We all already have this skillset within us. We just need to recognize it and utilize it. As the saying goes if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it. Knowing that your actions helped contribute to someone else’s life in a positive way serves no greater purpose and helps you reach such a high level of happiness more so that you ever could have known. If you have never experienced this, now is the perfect time to try and serve others. Trust me. It is as Cousin Eddie says to Clark Griswold in Christmas Vacation, “It’s the gift that keeps on giving.” So give the gift of serving. You will be glad you did.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self awareness?
