We Are All Human Beings
“From my point of view, no label, no slogan, no party, no skin color, and indeed no religion is more important than the human being.”
Like the taste of different foods for an infant acquires over time as they are exposed to it, we also do the same in developing our perspectives on things based on our experiences. But by doing, so how accurate and unbiased would our perspectives truly be? If we have a certain level of negative experiences or encounters that outweigh the positives as it relates to things like those mentioned in today’s quote above, will this not cloud our judgment on those things aforementioned? I think it would.
American novelist James Baldwin’s quote comes at a time when we need it most, during a pandemic or not, because the disease that we have all been suffering from since the beginning of time has been the complex nature of us labeling people based on a racial, sexual, political or religious nature. This is not a medical disease, it is a social one and one that doesn’t need to wait for a vaccine to be developed because we already have it. It is inside of each of us already, we just need to tap into it and release it.
The quote reminds us that we all have the opportunity each day to wipe our social awareness canvas clean and start anew because what is most important in all of us this is being a human being. One where we can use our empathetic nature to develop a newfound respect for others, creating a new sense of appreciation for diversity. Creating labels does not serve any purpose because what do we aa really get out of comparing? Feelings of sorrow of the things we wish we had? Proving that by having more than someone else we are somehow better than them? These things don’t matter and at all where our focus should lie. What matters is that we treat each other with the love and respect that we all righteously deserve. This is not a “would like to” plan of doing this, it is a “must” plan that is needed right now before it is too late.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
