It’s Your Choice

“There are no new ideas. There are only new ways of making them felt.”

-Audre Lorde

Today’s quote is from American writer, feminist and black activist Audre Lorde and is an excerpt from her book Sister Outsider. I find it a fascinating one in that although there are many ideas out there that are no longer new, it is through the power of our own decision making that helps us to give those ideas new life in the way we make them feel to ourselves and others.

In a way we all play a role as a salesperson in trying to get the consumer (aka the other person or people involved) to buy into ideas we are trying to present. As we go throughout this process, we are trying to analyze the situation at hand in seeing what would make them interested in that idea or in other words what would resonate most with them in order to get them to feel a certain way towards that idea. Based on the immediate feedback we receive, we can evaluate its effectiveness and adjust accordingly.

I also believe that when we look at new ways or perspectives based on old ideas, it actually helps new ideas come from them. We have the ability to always make ideas that are currently out there better because times are always changing and the things around us are always evolving. An example of this is technology. Just the iPhone alone from the first one made to today’s has changed. The iPhone is still called by the same name, so although this is no longer a new idea, the features that are on today’s phones are new. These new ways of enhancing our use in using this iPhone gives us a sense of empowerment and opens the doorway to more creative ways of using it for work or for that side hustle we have just started. It fills our emotional bucket for sure.

So when looking at taking old ideas and putting a new spin on them remember how capable you are in enacting this change. Like the latest iPhone, give those old ideas a much needed upgrade. It all comes from you decision making abilities. We all have them. We just need to choose to use them.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your responsible decision making skills?
