How To Make Others Become Better

“Don’t just encourage others, challenge them up so they become better.”

-Jon Gordon

Encouraging others is key in any relationship. But in today’s quote by Jon Gordon he challenges us to go a bit further in supporting others than just encouraging them. He tells us to challenge them so that they themselves become better.

Don’t misunderstand me, providing encouragement for others is very important and really serves as a prerequisite in a way in order to challenge them to reach their highest potential. There are different ways we can all show others encouragement in order to continuing building upon our relationships with them. A simple smile or head nod up and down acknowledging that you believe in them can go a long way towards building their self confidence and also establishing a strong bond of trust between the two of you. If you also take the time to learn about others it shows that you care about them. A step up from this is to verbally encouraging them by even just saying, “I believe in you” when you know that there is something they are attempting or wanting to do. Just those 4 simple words can go a long way. Writing others a note with words of encouragement can also be powerful for some as it can serve as a reminder for them to refer back to when they are faced with times where their self-confidence may be tested. I know firsthand how beneficial that is for me and I actually have them stashed in one of my file cabinets that I often refer back to which helps to turn around my day if I’m feeling down. Just remember that each person may be different in how they like to be encouraged so make sure you adapt to their needs as you would want the same done for you.

Once this is established you can then personally challenge them to become better because their own needs have been met as you have been encouraging them along the way. What they need to be better in will be different for each person but the results will be the same and it will ultimately help you to accomplish three things: 1. grow mentally and learn new things (in other words stretch yourself and your thinking) 2. strengthen your specific character traits that make you, you and 3. allow you to change your perspective on certain things by presenting it from a different viewpoint (a nice way of incorporating the skill of social awareness).

The key is always maintaining healthy relationships and what better way to encourage others by challenging them to be their best.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your relationship skills?
