“I have great belief in the fact that whenever there is chaos, it creates wonderful thinking. I consider chaos a gift.”
How do you feel about things around you or within you that are chaotic? Are you frazzled, scared, angry, determined or optimistic? Or perhaps all of those rolled into one. If you were to ask American educator and civil rights activist Septima Clark which emotion during chaotic times she would have displayed is one of optimism. In today’s quote she felt that whenever there was chaos was where wonderful thinking could be created. She went to go so far as to say the chaos was a gift. This yet again proves how powerful one’s perspective is. Others would look at chaos pessimistically and as if the world was falling down around them.
Septima Clark lived during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960’s where the fight for equal rights for Blacks was an everyday occurrence. Ms.Clark had a well-grounded sense of confidence in her abilities and developed literacy and citizenship workshops that played an important role in the drive for voting rights and civil rights for African Americans in the Civil Rights Movement. It was during these chaotic times here I think, as she put it, “wonderful thinking” came into play. Her goals for the workshops were to provide self-pride, cultural-pride, literacy, and a sense of one’s citizenship rights. And she accomplished just those things by creating a generation of individuals who where not only literate but also knew their civil rights.
More often than not, when we are under pressure we are able to step up to the plate and perform. I know that for myself, I may panic at first but then once I am able to focus on the task at hand and utilize my skillsets to get the job done, I’m able to do it well. I think if we didn’t have a little chaos in our lives from time to time we may become complacent and eventually lazy. Chaotic moments can bring forth that creative thinking if we are in some sort of rut whether it be in completing a certain project like writing a book or completing a proposal for your job. So next time let’s realize that with every hardship there is a silver lining. We just need to remember to look at things with a more positive outlook.
