Our Never Ending Fight
“Every generation has to fight anew the battle for liberty.”
-Margaret Thatcher
One of the most influential women of the 20th century was Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. She served as prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990. She was the longest serving Prime Minister of the 20th century and the first woman to hold that office. Many knew her as the “Iron Lady” because of her uncompromising politics and leadership style. If there was ever a person who had that innate fight within to battle for liberty it was her. Thatcher’s quote is a cry for future generations to decide to continue to that fight. Liberty is something we as a society must always continue to preserve in order to maintain our freedom from certain restrictions and to act as one pleases.
What each generation needs to decide is what is worth fighting for. Is it gender or racial equity or both? Is it focusing on the national debt crisis or the mental health crisis ? The number of topics that would fall under liberty is limitless. I think when making this decision one must look at what is needed most at the particular time and what would be most beneficial to society as a whole. In doing so, you may unintentionally make connections to other areas of need that could for a change create a positive domino effect making multiple facets of life as we know it better.
The thing we must keep in mind is that our decisions much like the decisions made by our parents’ generation and their parents’ generation before them helped bring us to where we are right now. Right at this moment. Our decisions then explicitly affect our children’s generation and so on. Like within any battle, there is a leader who strategizes and plans out things for battle: what to do if something does or does not work, and make the necessary adjustments along the way in attempt to get amore desired result. We re each that leader. The leader in how we conduct our lives in what we do and what we say. When we decide to execute our battle plan for liberty we ignite that fire from within to do all that is necessary to make life better for all.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your responsible decision making skills?
