“Human thought is like a monstrous pendulum: it keeps swinging from one extreme to the other.”
-Eugene Field
Our mind is constantly in motion even when we are physically not. When my Mom would tell my Dad that her mind at night was constantly thinking about things or worrying about something he would say to her, “Just shut it off” and she replied, “I can’t. My switch is broken.” All kidding aside our mind, and our mindset for that matter, is something that can be either our biggest adversary or our biggest nemesis. What is great about this is we get to choose whether we have a growth mindset or a fixed mindset.
American writer Eugene Field compared how we think to that of a gigantic pendulum in that we have to the tendency to let our thoughts swing from one extreme to the other which either puts us in a very positive frame of mind or one that is negative. As you may or may not know a pendulum is a weight hung from a fixed point so that it can swing freely backward and forward. Often times we see this within a classic grandfather clock. For the purposes of today’s message is that our thoughts, like our emotions are like that of a pendulum. They can and will go from one extreme to another. Our moral compass and the five areas of SEL are a part of that same pendulum and how we conduct ourselves on a daily basis swings things either within our favor or away from it. The thing is we decide how this is all going to go and which side of that pendulum they want it to swing towards.
If we believe that our abilities are developed through hard work, dedication and an overall commitment to the process we create a love of learning and establish a high level of resilience in that when life knocks us down we will have the skillset and the belief within ourselves to get back up. That is what having a growth mindset is all about. But if we believe that our basic abilities, intelligence and talents are just fixed traits in that they are predestined to be what they already are with the no hope of ever changing then we are living a fixed mindset. Our moral compass can only survive and continue to evolve and grow when we instill within ourselves a growth mindset.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
