Failing Forward

“Failure is only the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.”

-Henry Ford

The author and speaker John C. Maxwell wrote a book entitled Failing Forward where the purpose of the book is showing the main difference between average people and achieving people is their perception of and response to failure. It was one of my favorite books to read to date because it taught me that everything in life that happens for or to us is based on how we perceive things. We all have missteps in life and we can look at things as a failure or just as something that really served as an opportunity to take a different path to where we want to go in life. Henry Ford’s quote reminds us that failure is much like a do over in life in that we have the chance or opportunity to get it right the second time around now that we are much wiser due to what we may have just experienced.

Henry Ford was an American industrialist and business magnate, founder of the Ford Motor Company, and chief developer of the assembly line technique of mass production. His never quit attitude and perseverance when things did not always turn out the way he had intended it to happen in business or even personally served as a model for other entrepreneurs to follow in his footsteps. Through failure you learn more about yourself, what are your strengths and what your limitations might be. If it is a group venture that has failed, what your personal limitations are may be someone else’s strength on the team. From this angle is where the action of thinking more intelligently comes into play. It is often where you here the saying that it is better to think smarter, not harder.

When we do not allow negative self talk affect our thoughts, feelings or emotions we are able to gain a deeper sense of self reflection and get a much clearer perspective as to what may have worked well and what may have not. Adjustments can then be made and its that opportunity to attempt things again comes to fruition. Opportunities can become limitless. We are the ones that put limits on those opportunities and this happens when we give up on the dream or give up on ourselves. My advice is don’t let that quitting mentality enter in your psyche. You have too much to offer this world and your gifts, talents and ideas are needed in order to make this world a better place. And besides… even if you fail forward, you are still moving forward which is heading in the right direction.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self awareness?
