What Life Is Made Up Of
“Life—a culmination of the past, an awareness of the present, and indication of a future beyond knowledge, the quality that gives a touch of divinity to matter.”
-Charles Lindberg
What is living a full life really mean? To American aviator, military officer, author, inventor, and activist Charles Lindberg his description of what life was made up entailed what we experienced in our past, being aware of what our current reality is and a future that is beyond our own knowledge of what it could possibly become that makes it that much more glorious. And to me each part of our life, whether it is from our past, present or future there is one thing that is a part of each of these in our journey: our moral compass.
Our past and the experiences we have had help us prepare for the present moment we are encountering based on our internal values that help guide us and our ethical behavior and responsible decision making skills. When we are aware of the present we are in fact “in the moment” and our moral compass becomes the necessary companion we need in order to guide us towards being on the right path and ultimately the right destination. Our awareness connects to us becoming more mindful of who we are currently, how we conduct ourselves within society and with others, while remembering to make responsible decisions along the way. I like to think of life as being more or less like a game chess. For every move made, causes a countermove by your opponent, which in this case your opponent is life itself. This sets us up for appropriately creating our next move, or in this case our response to what just occurred during the match.
When it comes to thinking of our future like Charles Lindbergh said, it goes beyond our knowledge or even what we could possibly imagine for an obvious reason: it hasn’t happened yet. Besides if you would have told me when I left administrative world in 2009, I never thought in 2020 I would be back in that world again, let alone in the same school again (which I am very blessed to be in by the way). And for me it is this personal example, where divinity came into play.
Life is in fact that culmination of our past, present and future. It is important that we take advantage of this one way ticket and live life to the fullest. This is the only way we can live our best life.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
