The Ultimate Measure Of A Man

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr

We are all held or should be held to high standards, whether it be of our own design or someone else’s. But what are those standards that we are measured by? Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s quote clearly distinguishes between what is and what is not the measure of a man. When we stand in moments of comfort and convenience there really is no push back, no conflict and everything is treated as just matter of fact. However, when we stand at times of challenge and controversy we are thrust into taking a stance on something we wholeheartedly believe in. This can come at a cost though if either friends or family members do not stand for or believe in the things we do.

Comfort and convenience has never and will never enact or promote change. Comfort is a state of physical ease and freedom from pain or constraint while convenience is the state of being able to proceed with something with little effort or difficulty. Being free of pain or not having anything holding us back sounds intriguing and inviting, however by continuously being in this state it would never allow us to grow out of this comfort zone. Lack of effort breeds laziness and when challenges do arise we are more likely to quit before even getting things started.

It is through the challenges and controversies that we face head on that help define us. I feel that we need to either be part of the solution or we become part of the problem. And sometimes that problem occurs when we sit idly by and do nothing, reverting back to what makes us feel most safe: that good old feeling of comfort and convenience. It is time for us to come together when someone or something challenges the status quo. Will the road be easy? No. There will be ups and downs and sometimes those downs may seem to be overwhelming at times. It is in those times we must stand tall and peacefully stand for those who cannot. Be strong for those that are weak. We need to become the change, not just be it. It’s time once and for all to make a difference and stand for the common good of all mankind.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
