What It Takes To Be A Rebel

“I am not lucky. You know what I am? I am smart, I am talented, I take advantage of the opportunities that come my way, and I work really, really hard. Don’t call me lucky. Call me a badass.”

-Shonda Rhimes

One of the greatest gifts that one could ever acquire within their lifetime is the gift of self awareness: knowing who you are. More specifically knowing your why, your purpose. What you stand for. What you stand against. It is the belief that no matter what you have what it takes to rise above and can overcome anything while embodying a well-grounded sense of confidence, optimism, and an overall growth mindset.

Today’s quote comes from American television producer, screenwriter, and author Shona Rhimes who is best known as the showrunner—creator, head writer, and executive producer—of the television medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, its spin-off Private Practice, and the political thriller series Scandal. I love how she says luck has nothing to do with what has brought her success. Everything she has been able to accomplish so far in her life is due to who she is and what is awesome about what she says is she knows exactly what those redeeming qualities are. She is smart, talented and takes advantage of the opportunities when they become available. What I notice in everything she says is that the level of her self confidence is very high. She understands what makes her her. The strong belief that she has in herself and the strong work ethic she has is what made her into the success she has today.

We all possess this same rebel like approach deep within us. It is necessary to know what makes us us. How we tick. We need to be in touch with our emotions, thoughts and what we value. We cannot just wait for certain breaks to happen in our lives to help get us from point A to point B in our lives. We need to seek those opportunities that are out there and make breaks of our own. The time is now to be that rebel.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self awareness?
