The Longest Journey
“Sometimes the longest journey we make is the sixteen inches from our heads to our hearts.”
-Elena Avila
Life is an endless journey. We all seek to better understand ourselves, understand the world as as whole and find our place within it. When we think of a journey most times we relate it to travel-going from one place to another. This is in fact true but journeys are not always one that have to do with the physical journeys. Often times they are the ones that involve ones from our minds to our hearts. Author Elena Avila’s quote is one that depicts this as although both the heart and mind are things that we each possess, often times getting the two to actually connect and be on the same page can be in fact a challenge at times; thus becoming as Avila says, it becomes the longest journey.
As we know the mind provides us with an analytical perspective on things while the heart gives us an emotional perspective. I believe that we all have a tendency to default to one over the other. When I was younger my emotions always got the best of me and often times it was my emotions that led to many of the decisions I made instead of my head. This was partly because if a certain decision that I had to make might hurt another person, even if it was in the best interest of everyone, I’d go with the other option or even avoid it all together. Now that I am older, I’ve learned to bring together what is in my heart and what is in my mind to make the best balanced decision. This by no means is easy to do and there are still times where, depending on what the specific decision is about, I struggle with what to do because both sides provide rather convincing arguments. I do realize that this my own internal conflict that I am struggling with but I feel that self management and in this particular case, more specifically self discipline and impulse control are the two areas that I rely on when deciding the best decision to make as certain situations arise
This is never and will never be a one time journey from our heads to our hearts as I believe it is one that repeats itself in everything we do. But I also believe it is a journey well worth it because in the end it will ultimately make us a better person and allows us to live a well balanced, heartfelt and mindful life.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards managing yourself better?
