Do It For The Cause And Not For the Applause

“He was a man who looked at what ought to be done, not to the reputation is got by a man’s acts.”

-Marcus Aurelius

When you do something nice for someone else what is your motivation for doing that kind act? Is it for the cause or for the applause? Philosopher Marcus Aurelius believed in man doing what needed to be done because it was the right thing to do and not necessarily in hopes of achieving some sort of notoriety because of their heroic acts. And the key to all of this is being socially aware. We need to recognize the need to help others who are unable to help themselves and if necessary undo what may have been done wrong to someone else and make it right.

Too often we get caught up in our own wants, our own needs while others only help to see what they may gain or benefit as a result of helping someone else out. We are at a time where we each need to look deep within our soul and realize that this life should never be just about us because this world is bigger than just us. As Spock from the TV show and movies Star Trek once said, “The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the one.” So let’s make sure our focus is on making things right in this world and wholeheartedly realize that the important thing is to in face help the people within it, instead of just seeking out some sort of outcome that will benefit you only (aka the applause). Why don’t we try to seek and use that applause to cheer on those we are trying to help for a change?

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
