Go Out and Get It
“It’s not the having, it’s the getting.”
-Elizabeth Taylor
So I have a question of you: Do you know what you want out of life? I mean do you really know? What are your goals, your dreams, your aspirations? What strides have you made towards achieving them? Loaded questions I know. But here is the one in particular I want you to think about and decide on: are you more interested in having that goal/dream achieved or are you more interested in the journey in attaining it? Which brings you more satisfaction when its all said and done? If you were to ask the late actress Elizabeth Taylor she would say that it’s not about the having, but the getting.
Having is the end result and what you have to show for all of your efforts. It allows you to reflect on your accomplishments and realize how much you might have grown throughout the process. When you are busy getting like Taylor suggests, that’s really the thrill of it all as this is where you are in the moment and you have the opportunity to really soak things up throughout the process. As you are experiencing each of these moments you begin to realize the different emotions you may be going through. You recognize your strengths and what you bring to the table with your certain skill sets while building up along the way your self-confidence and self-efficacy. Don’t get me wrong the having brings about satisfaction too after a long journey to get there but its the excitement in the getting to that ending, the ups and downs you experience along the way that really makes it all worth it.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self awareness?
