Fear And How To Best Handle It
“We must all learn not only to not fear change, but to embrace it enthusiastically and, perhaps even more important, encourage and drive it.”
-Tony Hsieh
Turning a negative into a positive is something we should all strive to do each and everyday. Is it easy? Not at all. And usually what prevents us from overcoming something is fear. Former CEO of Zappos Tony Hsieh encourages us in today’s quote that we need to not only learn not to fear change but to embrace it by encouraging and driving it. Now the greatest challenge we face is not fearing change because many of us like when things more or less remain the same and stay more so status quo. We must bring forth an awareness that change is inevitable and it all comes down to our mindset: will we live and lead with a growth mindset or let life dictate how we live it through a fixed mindset? If we are open minded to change being a good thing this opens the door for self growth. Change should bring forth excitement and even hope. Is it scary? Yes. But most things in life that are new to us are. It is the fear of the unknown that scares us. But remember…if we never try and put ourselves out there how will we ever know what a true potential can become? By embracing change we accept it wholeheartedly. We are then all in. It is from there that we encourage ourselves to in a sense own that change and drive it as Tony Hsieh says to make it our own. We own the change, the change does not own us.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “All we have to fear, is fear itself.” He was right then as he is now. Fear is a concoction of our own thoughts, feelings and emotions. We give it its power and we are the ones that can take it away. So make sure that the next time change is occurring in your life, don’t fear it. Embrace it and seize the day.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards self awareness and managing yourself better?
This entry is dedicated to the memory of Tony Hsieh who passed away on November 27, 2020.
