Stop And Smell The Roses
“Life moved pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
-Ferris Bueller, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
If you ever get to see a classic movie from the 1980’s I’d recommend Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. This is the story of teenager Ferris Bueller who during his Senior Year in high school, along with his girlfriend and best friend skip school to enjoy the day in the city of Chicago. They wind up going from one adventure to the other. The movie itself was very entertaining but what stood out most to me is Ferris Bueller’s main message to the audience: “Life moved pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
Life does go by quickly. I remember like it was just the other day when I was in high school and today I’m married (for 22 years) and have a daughter in college. Hard to believe. Because things have happened so fast I have not always taken the time to take it all in. To smell the roses in other words. And this is what Ferris Bueller’s message is all about. If we don’t take the time to soak it all in, the moment, there’s a good chance we might miss it. And worse yet, at what cost?
Each day that we are alive we should be making sure to live life to the fullest. To leave no stone unturned as the saying goes. As we engage in each experience we need to be in the moment. Take note of what lesson we may get our that experience and how it affects our own moral compass. More specifically, how it effects what we value. Do the values we value continuously change or do they become deeply rooted and play a huge part as to who we are.
Don’t let life pass you by. Embrace it. For example when you on a family vacation to the beach take the time to soak it all in. Live in the moment. Be present there for your family. Be present there for yourself. That is something we need to do all the time so that we continue to grow and learn because that is what life is all about. Like I said earlier we need to take the time to stop and smell the roses.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
