The Absolute Necessity Needed for All Mankind To Survive

“Forgiveness is an absolute necessity for continued human existence.”

-Desmond Tutu

Sometimes in life one of the hardest things for us to do is to forgive someone. Depending on how someone may have done your wrong, it might be a point where forgiveness is not an option. At least not at this point in time. In today’s quote African Anglican cleric, theologian and human rights activist Desmond Tutu believed that an absolute necessity for our continued human existence is forgiveness. In 1984 Tutu won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in resolving and ending apartheid. Apartheid was a system of institutionalized racial segregation that existed in South Africa and South West Africa from 1948 until the early 1990s. So if anyone knows about forgiving others it is him.

There are things that have happened to me in my life that has taken a long time for me to forgive but I have. For me, it reached a point where that pent up anger or hurt was no longer serving like I thought it once was and I just needed to let it go. And for me by doing this I came full circle with things in my life. Now don’t get me wrong, I was able to forgive but will never forget because the words said to me and the actions behind those words cut me deep and although my wounds have healed, scars still remain. Memories-not good ones. But I realized that without them I would not be who I am today.

And when we talk about forgiveness it doesn’t just involve another person it also means forgiving ourselves which sometimes the hardest thing to do. We need to ensure that when we forgive we have come to terms with the wrongdoing that was done to us and are able to as they say let bygones be bygones. Its the only way in my opinion we can truly find inner peace.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
