Meet Me At the Help Others Section of the Bookstore
“There is an entire section in the bookshop called “self-help.” What we really need is a section called “help others.”
-Simon Sinek
I’m sure when you first read today’s title you thought to yourself: “Where in the world is there a Help Others section? I know there has always been a “Self Help” section.” And you would be right. There isn’t a “Help Others” section. At least not yet but there should be. British-American author and inspirational speaker Simon Sinek’s quote provides us a really thought provoking idea. His suggestion by no means is saying that bookstores need to get rid of the Self Help section but we need to add, probably right next to it, a Help Others section. It reminds me that while it is important that we always look to help ourselves become better as individuals and continuously improve, our true purpose is taking this knowledge and applying it towards helping others.
Relationship skills are crucial and that is why I think there is a Self Help/Self Improvement section specifically bookstores like Barnes and Nobel or Books-A-Million: if we do not have a good and solid relationship with ourselves then how can we have one with others? We are facing some challenging times as a nation and we need one another. Many of us recognize this but may not know how to really help one another. How to communicate and socially engage with one another. And I don’t mean via text or through social media. I mean actually talking to someone and interacting which seems to be a loss art at times. We need to help others problem solve and be there for them in their time of need.
There are resources out there to help us help others. We just need to take the time to find them and utilize them. It may start with what resources may have helped us and using these to help others. Whatever we use and whatever we start with is better than choosing not to help others at all. That should not be our line of thinking at all. So take the time to help others. Who knows? Due to these series of unfortunate events that have occurred in our nation, we might be getting that Help Others section added to bookstores sooner than later.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your relationship skills?
