It’s About The Climb

“You cannot push anyone up a ladder unless he is willing to climb a little himself.”

-Andrew Carnegie

Sometimes in life in order for us to get from Point A to Point B we may receive help and guidance from others but it is up to us to really get their on our own. In today’s quote American industrialist Andrew Carnegie uses the example of a ladder to make this same point. We can’t push anyone up a ladder unless they are willing to climb a little themselves.

Have you ever helped someone climb a ladder before? Besides holding the ladder the person climbing it might need a boost to go from the ladder to the roof for example. For the person doing the pushing, it is near impossible to help them onto the roof if the person climbing doesn’t at least help boost them up at the same time. It takes the decision of the climber to willfully push themselves off of the ladder and onto the roof. This is the same thing that happens when we make decisions in life. No matter how much others are pushing us and encouraging us along our pathway towards becoming who we are, it is ultimately our choice to endure that climb. We choose to overcome obstacles that we face. We choose the steps to get there. We pivot when we need to pivot. Although the ladder is the tool we use to make the climb, we are the ones that choose to take that first step. And the step after that and the step after that. We won’t know how things will look when we reach the top just like we don’t know what things will look like at the top of a mountain after a hard, long climb. This bodes the same for when we make the climb in life towards reach our goals and dreams. Singer and songwriter Miley Cyrus’ It’s The Climb about perseverance and overcoming. Below are some lyrics from that song I’d like to close with that reminds me that life is all about about the climb and that climb only can start when we choose to do so:

There’s always gonna be another mountain
I’m always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Sometimes I’m gonna have to lose
Ain’t about how fast I get there
Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side
It’s the climb.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your responsible decision making skills?
