Don’t Lose Faith In One Another

“The moment we break faith with one another, the sea engulfs us and the light goes out.”

-James Baldwin

Faith can be a powerful entity. It does necessarily mean something religious as this word is often associated with. It is a force that cannot be seen but rather felt. A belief in something greater than ourselves. American novelist James Baldwin uses the word faith in today’s quote in emphasizing that “the moment we break faith with one another, the sea engulfs us and the light goes out.” Although this was written some time ago it’s message is one that should resonate with us all and always be in the forefront of our minds.

Society is at very fragile state in this point in time. This past year has tested our faith in one another, our humanity. We are the United States of America. The key word is united. United means be joined together for a common purpose or by common feelings. It even mentions being joined together politically which always seems to be a contentious topic. We need to remember that despite what may have happened over the past year and despite the differences and hurtful feelings that were said or done, we can only focus on the now. Focus on healing, in my opinion, focus on mending a fractured relationship within our country.

I still have faith in us as a society as a whole and that if we remember why our fore fathers founded the United States in the first place and the values they stood for we can strengthen that light in the soul of our nation once more. We need to listen and not be so quick to judge. Do we not want what is best for all? Because we should. We can only be truly united when we hold ourselves to a higher standard and live for one another and not just for ourselves.

Let’s take this time to heal and repair our faith in one another. Without having the faith that we can and will rise above these dark times, what else is there for us to believe that we can save ourselves from ourselves?

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware and developing better relationship skills?
