Don’t Try To Fix The Past, Build The Future
“Time spent fixing the past takes time away from building the future.”
-Simon Sinek
Does anyone have a time machine or access to Doc Brown’s Delorean from the movie Back to the Future by chance? The answer to this rather bizarre question is no. Would we perhaps love to have these in order to right the things that may have gone wrong at that point in time? Of course. But at what cost would it affect in changing other events or where you are right now? Is it really worth the risk? Now that is a harder question to answer and one that only you can answer. For me it isn’t. Today’s focus is not on fixing the past however. As British-American author and speaker Simon Sinek once said when we spend time trying to fix the past it is taking time from building our future. In essence fixing the past is out of our control but building our future isn’t. That is still very much in our hands.
There are many events of the past that many of us wish to be undone: certain wars, certain unnecessary attacks on countries, the outright unnecessary and unjust murders of the innocent, lack of gender and racial equity just to name a few. But again there is nothing that we can do to fix the past. Today’s purpose is for us to come together and focus on the future and building this into a world that we want to live in. A world that we want our children’s children to be a part of.
Like anything we build in life or create for that matter, it all starts within an idea; a vision of the future. It is then developing a plan for making that vision a reality. From there it is ensuring that this vision takes into account other people’s perspectives while empathizing with them in understanding their diverse backgrounds and cultures so that in fact no one is truly being left behind. As this movement gains momentum, so does the positive change that comes a long with it and its message of hope. Our future can become what we make it. It just needs to be intentional and purposeful. It needs to be built with one of the most important attributes that it can be built with: love.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
