Our Dead Selves

“The only clear view is from atop the mountain of your dead selves.”

-Peter J. Carroll

Author Peter J. Carroll’s quote at first glance or of hearing it sounds pretty morbid. But if we look at it a little closer, we will see that it has a much deeper meaning. When we are in the moment or in that daily grind of our lives we often cannot as see the forest from the trees as the saying goes. Life can get overwhelming and it is hard for us to see the progress we may have made in a certain project even when that project just so happens to be us and improving ourselves.

Peter J. Carroll reminds us that when we take a step back and assess how far we have come, we recognize that every step along our journey has in fact changed us from who we were from the day before. We continue to grow with each new experience and as we grow we transform ourselves into somebody new. We replace our dead selves or who we used to be. This occurs through the choices we make based on our morals and principles which is our moral compass. Once we recognize this our view from our own mountaintop becomes that much more clearer.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
