Welcome to the Becoming The Change Podcast. Each daily reading focuses on a different quote on how we can best apply it to our own moral compass and one of the five areas in Social Emotional Learning: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision Making. Thank you for listening and we hope you consider subscribing to the podcast for future episodes.
A Natural Consequence
“Being offended is the natural consequence of leaving one’s home.”
-Fran Leobwitz
In today’s quote American author Fran Leobwitz reminds us to be prepared to be offended when we choose to leave our home and interact with others and the world around us. It is inevitable and when we do we are almost certainly faced with others and their unpleasant personal habits. These are different than ours but we need to remember that is ok because so are ours. We just need to get over it.
Ken Wert, found of meantobehappy.com writes about 10 ways we can stop being so easily offended:
#1: TALK YOURSELF OUT OF BEING OFFENDED
#2: PUT YOURSELF IN THE “OFFENDER’S” SHOES
#3: ASSUME A BENEVOLENT MOTIVE-assume that they have noble intent
#4: PRACTICE DETACHMENT-keep emotion out of it
#5: LEARN HUMILITY-its the key to inner peace and true happiness
#6: LOVE TRUTH MORE THAN BEING RIGHT
#7: OVERCOME SELF-CENTEREDNESS-it’s not about you
#8: RESERVE JUDGMENT
#9: ACCEPT IMPERFECTION
#10: ACCEPT YOURSELF-this also means that you love yourself and the imperfections from #9
There is a quote he used from Abraham Lincoln that I believe sums things up best when it comes to the concept of being offended:
“We should be too big to take offense and too noble to give it.”
~ Abraham Lincoln
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
