The Power Of Discovery

“There is no better high than discovery.”

-Edward O. Wilson

When I was a child one of the things I loved to do was use my imagination. I’d pretend to be the explorer Indiana Jones discovering lost treasures or civilizations. Even when I wasn’t role playing I loved playing with my friends and exploring our neighborhood especially why it came to the wooded areas within it. We learned so much from these experiences as we enjoyed the thrill of discovery. Now that I am an adult I may not explore so much in the physical world around me but I still pursue that excitement of discovery through my quest for continual personal growth and further self discovery into understanding more about myself and those I interact with.

American biologist Edward O. Wilson’s quote serves as that reminder for us all that our natural high in life should be discovery itself. This discovery can be learning more about ourselves, learning about others and their cultural backgrounds or even about the surroundings in which we live. Going to museums, parks, and taking classes on learning how to cook or do crafts all contribute to that never ending desire to continue to grow through discovery, through exploration. Each experience, each moment contributes in the continual development of our own moral compass. Discovery to me is a celebration of life and is something to be cherished so let’s make an effort to never lose that kid inside of us and continue to be open towards new discoveries and experiences.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
